O čemu se radi u programu "Škole za 21. vek"?
Really informative
Hi i have my a level English exam in 8 hours... ill report back to you all later
From Nigeria, glad I came across this video. I love it when my country is recognised in a discussion. Thanks Mr. David Crystal.
"The power of the British empire"? Yes. "The power of American imperialism"? No. The power of US economy. Sheer numbers.
David was speaking about this "American imperialism took off from 1900 to 1914 under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. Each American president approached imperialism differently."
Estoy de acuerdo
In India Sanskrit not used by anyone as a spoken language
Who’s here for AICE Lang A
I think Spanish could very well be the new dominant language in North America in the next century.
Indians say "What is your good name?"
In 1,000 years time there will be no spoken languages amongst humans.
Yes, we will speak in "clicks" like aboriginal tribes.
A great influential man on talking about language change whose theory and opinion are always quoted in paper 3 of A level English language. We love you professor..❤.❤❤
If I was a betting man, I would back Arabic to replace English
I want to know who were the teachers of David Crystal!
The irony is that at some point those who only speak English will not be able to understand what the rest of the world is talking about...A world language is not the same as the languages spoken in the world....
Estu Esperanto la monda lingvo... homaranisma racia lingvo. 😊
Power drive language, people don’t learn language because it’s beautiful. They learn because the nations that speak 🗣️ it are powerful.
🤣
Omg, opening remark re Latin. So Eurocentric. Does he not realise that more people on the planet back then had no idea what Latin even WAS let alone spoke it. Ffs, Chinese was more spoken than Latin ... and is still dominant to English.
Language = power is a strawman. Population numbers are tilting away from imperialism as a language driver as nationalism re-emerges. So many people are sick of American influence.
Bravo! 😊
Clear, precise and updated to what goes on in 2023! Great!
Great speech and ideas!
In the US, the old expression for chaos also uses a train station, in this case, Grand Central Station (in New York). It’s gone out of favor; however, probably because there are so many chaotic places now, that Grand Central doesn’t stand out (I’m guessing). In any case, due to the extent of the British Empire, as well as its history of borrowed words from a variety of cultures, the standard English uses a lot of the types of words from around the world, discussed here as localized Englishes. Very interesting topic, thanks!
Interessante
I love Speaking English especially British English rather than American English
Americans now pronounce data the British way because of Sir Patrick Steward on Star Trek. So it is now Date Ah, not Dat ah or Dart Ah.
The biggest challenges for teachers are the low pay British council offers and the fact that they make us stay up between 2 am-6am for several nights in a row to monitor the uploads of hours. And if you complain, you get fired
What a man, he is❤❤ Love from Pakistan❤🎉
It's pity that English has become the global language. There are other languages like Indonesian which would've been much better. But only reason English is so widespread is because of colonialism. It's neither an easy language to learn nor is it very beautiful. And don't get me started on the spelling ...
why indonesian?
His accent is crisp and crystal clear
I am not sure that understanding the flexibility of english will help me be a better teacher, when I am going to teach one dialect that already is confusing as hell
Learn and teach the correct way first, then allow for modern adaptations once it's mastered. It remains that British RP is the superior and most understandable accent. This man is very smart, but he strikes me as someone who wants to remain relevant by embracing modern language. English language has peaked. Where we go from here is gobbledegook. The fast changes that occur on the internet are a result of laziness and ignorance. I'm not sure we should encourage it.

No one knows
Amazing
We must stop Spanish penetration into English . Spanish is inferior language than English .

Is this video still up to date?
Si hablas Español and English you puedes comunícate con 80% of the población del mundo.
awesome

No, 10 years more
I was told Mandarin was the most widely spoken language followed by Spanish but I stand corrected...

It's 2023 me listen about twitter
this intro is really noise

Probably atleast until it merges with another language or morphs into something else entirely. A few reasons (in my eyes) 1) Chinese (the main competition) is far too complicated for most people to learn. 2) English already incorporated multiple different languages into itself with many words. 3) Existing documentation. Obviously this is a big one, just the act of changing the status quo is a massive endeavor. 4) It uses a more common alphabet as opposed to Asian styled writing which is something else entirely. 5) China probably won't beat the US in terms of global influence in the next few decades as originally predicted due to some disastrous policies hurting it's rapidly aging population. Spanish vs English on the other hand is a much harder discussion. But it's ultimately the same result. Spanish doesn't have a major nation pushing it's use like China or the US. Hell there's gonna be more Spanish speakers in the US than anywhere else soon depending on who you ask.
It helps that English is a very simple language to learn and speak. Compared to Latin, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, etc...
Compared to Chinese?? In terms of grammar, Chinese is the easiest language. You have to check it out in Wikipedia.
@@Takuaku867 sorry, I have been to China and loved the trips. But I think that writing and reading in the Chinese characters is very difficult to learn, don’t you think?
@@ricardoheurich7824 I dont think so. For Japanese, Korean people, it is very easy to read. In addition to that, If you know 600 characters, then you can read more than 90% of all contexts.
@@Takuaku867 I will take your word for it 😉😀. But the way I see it this is a major drawback. 600 caracters? You really think this is a easy? Besides the rest of the world uses the Latin alphabet ( well, the Russians would not agree …).
@@ricardoheurich7824 only 600 characters. If you learn English, you have to know a lot of random spellings. Chinese character: 1 character=1 sound=1 meaning. I suppose you have to know other languages, such as Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Israel. They do not use Latin alphabet.
